Whenever i start work on a new product or existing product i make sure there is always a well defined vision. This allows me to create a strategy to make meaningful steps towards that vision. Product Management 101.
Why treat your career any different?
This was a lightbulb moment for me 4 years ago. I spent time thinking about where i want to be in 10 years and wrote it down (that was my vision). Then i proceeded to break that vision down into 2 year chunks and defining the skills and experiences i'll need to build each step of the way (this was my strategy).
The most important part of all of this is owning that strategy and vision & being clear to the people who you manage and the people who manage you what your vision is. By telling everyone about your vision, you will make yourself accountable for it. Exactly the same as owning a product.
You are the customer of your career - you will experience it very similar to the way you experience a product.
To find product market fit in a product you need to drive value for your customers and it's exactly the same for your career, your career has to give you purpose and a reason to keep investing in it.
A key part of this process is to try and understand what a valuable career means for you as the individual. For example value could equal "spending more time with my kids" or "creating more equality in recruitment" (or even multiples of these).
Additionally what determines value could change over time, very similar to how a products value changes and augments over time.
